Lost 1890 - Two-masted schooner
Little has been published about this site, so some details are uncertain. If you can add to its story, please email [email protected].
The Apollo was a small American two-masted schooner in the salt trade. Salt raked from the pans of the Turks Islands was a staple cargo for North American schooners, and Bermuda lay squarely on the route north.
In February 1890, bound from Turks Island to Nova Scotia with salt, she was wrecked on Bermuda's reefs. With a cargo that dissolves and a wooden hull, little of such a vessel would survive for long.
The old version of this site placed her near Hungry Bay on the South Shore in about 20 ft of water; no published source checked for this update confirms the location.
No current dive-operator guide or Government listing describes the Apollo as a dive site, and no coordinates are published. Any remains would be scant (ballast and fastenings at most) in shallow water. Treat this as a historical entry.
